Many Canadians mourned today after hearing that Tragically Hip front-man Gord Downie had passed away. We knew the day would come but none of us were really ready to let him go…not yet. Social media streams were filled with his lyrics and talk of how great a songwriter, performer, man and Canadian Gord was. He did much for this country through music and through many efforts on his own to try and make us a better place.
As I sat at home trying to figure out what I could do to remember the man who was there with me in college for many all nighters, after work relaxing, having a beer with some friends or just enjoying some time out in the backyard. Gord and The Hip made their way into so many Canadians playlists. I saw many say he was the soundtrack to their lives.
I tried to capture some of his optimism as he faced the end but chose to live and fight for what he believed in. The courage he showed us all and even his sense of humour.
I got to see the Ottawa show during the final tour and like most if not all of Canada watch that final performance in Kingston. What a ride.
Rest well Gord and thanks for everything, we will always have the music.
