For the first time in his 9 year pro career Tony Luis finally gets to fight in front of his hometown fans this Saturday at the Cornwall Civic Complex. It’s been an interesting year for Luis who is now with a new promoter (Liveco Boxing).
While Luis is approaching Saturday as just another fight in his quest for another title shot, it comes with some added volume and buzz with it being here in Cornwall. I saw how many people asked him how training was going and if he “was ready” when he popped by the Corus Caring Hearts Radiothon last week. I can imagine he can’t go anywhere without answering the same questions over and over again.
One thing I know about Tony is his passion, desire and commitment to his career and the sport. Since he turned pro he has been one of Cornwall’s biggest ambassadors no matter where his fight was taking place. He spoke fondly about his hometown support and “waived the flag” at many events whether he be fighting out of town or making appearances in and around town. As a matter of fact, he was named Ambassador of the Year by the Chamber of Commerce a few years ago, an award well deserved.
Now it’s our turn to support him by getting a ticket to Saturday’s fight and showing him that we noticed all he has given to this community and his time spent supporting the city when called upon. He’s one of the good guys who you’ll like after mere moments chatting with him. It’s our time to show up in great numbers Saturday night and stand in his corner and cheer him to an important victory. I know Tony has his “A” game ready, now it’s time for us to do the same as a community.
Don’t forget there is also another local fighter on the card in Akesasne’s Ronnie “Rocket” Robidoux who will step into the ring as a pro for the 3rd time after starting 2-0 with 2 KOs. He trains with Tony under the guidance of Jorge Luis and Matt Veenstra at Champs Eastside Boxing Club here in Cornwall.
