After a three and a half year run of treatments 13 year old Alex Tourangeau rang the bell at CHEO yesterday. The bell is a symbol that you have finished all treatments.
Alex is a brave young man who inspires hope and courage to many others, and not just youth battling cancer. While he can be a beacon of hope for other children going through the same thing, he makes us all take note and pay attention to what he has endured over the past three plus years. This moment brings tears to my eyes that are filled with joy and pride for this young warrior.
I had the pleasure of meeting this young man a few weeks ago while we were both “celebrity” servers at Boston Pizza. Alex came that night despite not feeling very well after a chemo treatment. He had a smile on his face and was determined to come out and support the Candlelighters who had supported him during his battle with cancer. It’s one of those encounters that left an impression on my I will not soon forget and remember from time to time when I think I’m having “one of those days”. I did see my father battle cancer and know the mental fortitude and determination is takes to keep chugging forward. Alex did all that and then some as a 10 year old into his 13th year. Alex you inspire me more than you know and I’m sure others feel the same. The crowd at the bell yesterday at CHEO are a testament to that. The world is a better place with people like you in it. Thank you for showing us courage and determination and a great human spirit. High Five!
