I always make sure to take more than just a moment on November 11th to honour and remember those who sacrificed and those who are sacrificing for our freedom. In 2010 Canadian band The Trews recorded the song Highway of Heroes and my friend Kris was asked to play the bagpipes on the track. That song is played on my phone or computer every year now more than once. The song connects me to those brave souls through more than just a friend playing on the track.
In 2009 I took the photo below while driving the Highway Of Heroes on my way to a work engagement in Toronto. All the overpasses were filled with people waving flags and wearing red to honour a fallen soldier who was coming home. The emotion I felt that day will never be forgotten and this song always helps bring me back to that day.
I will be at the cenotaph in Cornwall tomorrow for the ceremonies here in town and I hope to see you there too. If you cannot be there please take that moment or two at 11am and remember, it’s the least we can do for all that has been done for us.
To those fallen, those who served, those who are serving and those who will one day serve to allow me to enjoy life as I know it in Canada…THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart. I will never forget.
