It’s now the Catholic School Board’s turn to feel the wrath of parents of students at a number of schools that a report has recommended be closed. Why you ask? Because the province has updated the school funding formula which essentially punishes schools for having empty desks. What’s the Board’s solution… close schools. At least that’s what has been proposed and what seems easiest to do to have the most funding possible. However, is the bigger problem being ignored.
More and more, couples are deciding to have less children or simply leave the area for bigger urban centres. Ergo, less students in rural schools which lets face it, are in most cases, the heart and soul of these small communities. These possible closures are absolutely ripping that heart and soul in two. So is there another solution? I think so. Maybe the Danish have the right idea? Make babies!
I know that this may seem simplistic (and a bit naughty) but hear me out. The route the government and the school boards have taken to angering parents and tax payers across the region and indeed the province where similar school boards are facing funding crunches.
But if the Ontario government was to take a “make more babies” approach and start rewarding couples for filling the seats at the schools, there wouldn’t be the anger and hostility we are seeing with the option of closing schools and bussing students across Eastern Ontario to be educated.
I’ll close out with another Danish “up the birth rate” video. I find these videos really… motivating. ~Bill
