Now that the agreement between Cornwall and Akwesasne is done and they co-own the harbour land what comes next. There will be many talks over the next several months to ensure they are all on the same page before any movement on the property happens. A move which is wise since this is such an important piece of real estate.
Cornwall’s Groupe Renaissance Group has done some research and work on what could be there in the future. Click here for a brochure from their website.
Moving forward I hope that both sides see the economic opportunity to develop this area as a tourist attraction with shops, bistros and other businesses that would bring people to the area. All this must also be done with the environment in mind making sure it does not have a negative impact of the St.Lawrence River.
I could point to many other municipalities which have invested in their waterfront to further their local economic engine and I hope that type of thinking, even though it’s still early, is part of this new agreement and process.
There is already new economic activity in this area of Cornwall with the Cotton Mill condos, the Edison building, another condo project will soon go up as well as Cotton Mill Pharmacy, medical clinics and more to come real soon. I hope we can build on the great momentum we’re already seeing down here since Boom 101.9 is in the Weave Shed building at 709 Cotton Mill Street.
