With the election of a majority Liberal government still fresh on the minds of Canadians, an sad anniversary played out in Ottawa on Thursday morning. It was a year ago that a lone gunman shot a killed Cpl. Nathan Cirillo at the National War Memorial and then stormed Parliament Hill only to be shot and killed himself by Sergeant At Arms Kevin Vickers.
During the solemn ceremony at the War memorial yesterday paying honour to Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent who was killed 48 hours earlier than Cirillo by an Islamic Extremist, history came together. In sign of unity for these fallen soldiers, bitter rivals came together.
The outgoing PM and incoming PM together, putting politics aside, laying a wreath at the War Memorial. A video that shows we indeed have the best democracy in the world.
Just a day after the attack on the Hill, the house resumed and once again the leaders came together to show solidarity in the wake of this attack.
We can only hope that the politics of compromise and cooperation bleeds into the 42nd Parliament. ~Bill
