“We always take care of our own” I have often been heard saying that and last week I saw again first hand how this community steps up to help.
Over 200 people took in the inaugural Flavours Of Our Downtown(FOOD) event in support of bringing chemotherapy to Cornwall Community Hospital. The evening raised over $15,000 for the hospital foundation, that number still gives me chills.
This was personal for me since the event was in memory of my father, Richard, who lost his battle with cancer in November last year. I know dad would have supported this fundraising effort since he went through the daily commute to Ottawa and even Toronto to get his treatments.
I cannot begin to express my thanks and gratitude to the volunteer committee who helped bring this together and the restaurants who gave all they had to ensure this event was a success. I’m no stranger to downtown but my now intimate experience with Bar Q, Esca, Schnitzels, Table 21 and Truffles was nothing short of amazing. What they did that night from the owners to the chefs to the staff was something I will not soon forget. I hope they truly know how much it means to me and my family. When you head out for a bite to eat please consider these great community supporters and support them so they can continue to participate in similar events for local causes. They were the rockstars of the night. The comments about the amazing food samples supporters were treated had some of them still almost drooling over the symphony of flavours they had experienced.
The fact one facebook post led to this event being sold out still amazes me. We wrestled with it being on a Tuesday night but that didn’t stop anyone from coming out. What a great community we live in.
It looks pretty good for this event to return perhaps in the spring or at least again next fall.
A huge thank you to everyone from me and my entire family.
