It was a sad day to learn that the last hot air balloon festival in Ontario was cancelled. It was really something the city could be proud of. It brough economic spinoffs, great entertainment and helped offer family fun for two decades.
We could spend our time disecting how and why it all fell apart but the truth is I prefer remembering the good times right now and then investigate how we can maybe revive the festival.
For me, it was really a family affair with my parents always volunteering in the VIP tent. They loved being there and chatting with the locals taking in a cold beverage on a hot summer day while great Canadian talent performed on stage. I myself sat on the board as head of security for 5 years.
My favorite memory is not one event or two, it’s all the times I ran into old friends on the grounds or in the beer garden that I had not seen in some time. They were in town that weekend for the festival, so it did help bring people together. I will miss those encounters and brief catch-ups with old friends.
Kudos to all who helped organize and supported Lift-Off for the past 20 years and here’s hoping we can see it comeback someday so we can all raise a glass together again!
