I’ve always said age is just a number and while I still believe that, 40 kicked my ass! Overall it was a decent year but health wise I suffered a severe sciatic flare in February and in July got into a cycling accident where I shattered my collar bone, collapsed a lung and broke a back rib. It’s been rough.
All these things reminded me of how much my family loves me with the care I got from my wife and kids. The hospital visits from my friends and the offers of help that came when I was out of commission for a few weeks.
It’s not about the events of the year but how you perceive and act upon them. I feel like I did get better this year, not older. I am taking more time for me, buying expensive beers to treat myself, getting better sport and concert tickets and just enjoying everything I have. Life should get better with age, not the reverse. Each year you should take those lessons and apply them to improve how you live, enjoy what you have and be better.
It’s not about the number, it’s not about the number of candles on the cake or how much is in your bank account. It’s about how you feel, how you approach situations and how you live. Experiences used the right way make you appreciate the small things and deal with some of the more crappy moments.
Dwelling on the past is for the weak. Look and move forward. Live the next year better and happier than the last one, Use your new knowledge to improve yourself, take some risks and live for you, not for others.
How will you spend your year until it’s time to blow out your next candles? It’s up to you.
Get better, not older.
