You can sense the excitement all across the country. The NHL is about to lift the veil on the 2013-14 season and everyone who enjoys the game of hockey is biting their nails in anticipation. Today, everyone is in first place.
As a Leaf fan I will always cheer on my team til the end. Game 7 against Boston in the first round of last year’s playoffs certainly tested that. However, there are other teams who seem to be higher on the “Could Win The Stanley Cup” list. Chicago, Pittsburgh, Boston and L.A. seem to be the odds on favorites in Vegas with Detroit and St. Louis having outside chances. Most other teams are in the middle of the pack and are probably a couple players away from true contenders.
The Leafs are making a big commitment to their best player, Phil Kessel, in the way of a multi-year deal at an average of 8 million a year. The intent is to lock him in and work hard to try and land a centreman who can get the puck to him consistently. He’s had a number of guys try to keep up with him over the last 3 years in Toronto, but there has been no long term success in that department. Until, Toronto gets that C-man, whether it’s Dave Bolland skating up the centre or Phil moving up the middle with Dave Clarkson on the right side or even finding that right person through a trade, Toronto won’t have long term success. With Kessel locked up for the next 8 years, it should be easier to find a player who willing to the Yin to Phil’s Yang on the top line.
To tide us Leaf fans over til tonight’s Habs/Leafs tilt, here’s a video of the Best of Phil Kessel. Your welcome.
