Being a Yankee fan in Canada is like being a Toronto Maple Leafs fan in Canada. There is a lot of them but they get a lot of ridicule when they found out. Thankfully I’m not a Yankee fan. But fans of the sport of baseball have never cared about the uniform that Mariano Rivera wore.
Over the last 20+ years he has been by far the most dominate closer the game has ever seen. Even when you put him up against the great closers of the game, it’s no contest. Rolly Fingers, Tom Heinke and Dennis Eckersley were great in their time, Mo, as Mariano is affectionately referred to, is above them all. And even as great a ball player as he has been, on Thursday night, he was a guy who was walking away from the job he loved. How fitting it was that two of his teammates, Derek Jeter and Andy Pettitte came out to take him out of the game and send him into the history books to become the most celebrated Relief Pitcher in baseball.
I dare you to watch the clip below without shedding a tear. I couldn’t.
Thanks for memories Mo. I only wish you could have played for a team I could cheer for. Alas, I truly hate the Yankees.
