You’ll probably see and read many articles and blogs similar to this today, but let me offer my unique interpretation of the events that transpired on September 11, 2001.
Twelve years ago, in my life – things were pretty simple. I was 16, learning to drive, goofing off in classes in high school without an real sense of direction or a desire to have any. Now, I’m not going to tell you that the events of 9/11 changed my life or set me on a path of success and purity. But, what they did do was open my eyes. This was a big deal, and it was very real. I remember the announcement over the P-A system as I sat in my English class. At the time, I don’t think anyone really grasped what had happened. We were pulled out of class and assembled in the gym to watch the events on television briefly. Which at the time meant, we’ll we were getting out of class.
When I got home later that day, the magnitude of what had happened really hit me. The events still poured from the television on pretty much every station. I actually watched the news, I was captivated by it and couldn’t turn away. I remember thinking, how could someone do this. Those poor people, their families – it was a horrible feeling. It was then I felt like I cared about the news, I cared a little more about the world as a whole. I can pin-point the events as providing me with a moment of “Adult Conversation.” I became more interested in the world around me. I think a lot of people who were also in high school at the time did. It was all everyone was talking about in the halls.
Now, at 28 – my job sort of revolves around “what’s happening.” What’s happening in Cornwall, what’s happening in Canada and what’s happening around the globe. It’s all about being in the know and talking about the issues that are important to others. I may be behind the mic, but it’s not about me – it’s about you. It’s about others!
So today, I reflect back on the anniversary of the day that opened my eyes. I think of those who lost their lives, those who were heroic and saved them and the way the world came together.
September 11, 2001. An important day in history for anyone who remembers how the events shaped their lives.
